ABOUT

THE TEAM

The Shark Odyssey was founded by Clara Calatayud, Lara Marcus, and Yago Doson in 2015. The three met in 2002 while pursuing their careers in Biological Sciences at the University of Barcelona. They soon realized that passion for marine wildlife, especially for sharks, was a common denominator. In 2006, the three traveled to the Seychelles Islands to participate on a marine conservation expedition. While monitoring coral reefs and sea turtle populations for several months, magic encounters with reef sharks and whale sharks became a reality. They returned to Barcelona with the clear aim of focusing their careers toward shark conservation.

After finishing their studies at the University of Barcelona the three decided to move overseas to gain field experience and pursue their graduate studies. Clara continued her work as a Marine Biologist/Underwater Guide on a tall ship while completing her Master degree in Oceanography and Marine Ecology. Lara moved to Australia to specialize in Whale Sharks, completing her Master degree at the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies before enrolling in her PhD where she’s focused on Whale Shark ecology. Yago worked as an underwater guide on several live-aboard dive boats before enrolling in his Master degree in Fisheries science at the University of British Columbia.

After finishing her Master program, Clara enrolled in a pre-doctoral internship studying shark ecology in Baja California Sur, Mexico. Her study focused on diver- shark interactions and how implementing an appropriate management plan for recreational shark diving can be a useful way to protect shark populations worldwide.  Clara then returned to Barcelona to set up a new concept of shark diving research. This was the beginning of The Shark Odyssey.

OUR PARTNERS

OUR APPROACH TO SHARK RESEARCH AND CONSERVATION:

The Shark Odyssey uses a global holistic approach to shark conservation. Our key aim is to engage the general public including recreational divers and local communities around the world to help scientists gather data on the biology, ecology, and demography of sharks. For this, we have developed citizen science programs such as shark research camps and monitoring surveys in collaboration with the ecotourism industry. New data collected in our programs will facilitate scientists and governments to protect and preserve these iconic species worldwide.

OUR PARTNERS

Our partners are critical to the success of the shark research and conservation citizen science program. Our partners include local NGOs, research institutions and local tour operators. The Shark Odyssey is grateful for the continuous support and expertise offered by the following entities:

MEXICO AZUL

Together with The Shark Odyssey, Mexico Azul aims to create a sustainable, progressive and effective project, which will not only serve as an exceptional adventure for participants, but will also contribute towards the protection of Mexico’s beloved marine life.

PELAGIOS KAKUNJÁ

Pelagios-Kakunjá is a non-profit organization that seeks to understand movements and migratory patterns of marine top predators. Led by world renowned shark experts Dr. Mauricio Hoyos and Dr. James Ketchum, Pelagios-Kakunjá aims to generate baseline information for the regional management and implementation of conservation strategies for sharks and other top marine predators in the Gulf of California and Mexican Pacific.

As  the scientific advisors of the citizen science program, Pelagios-Kakunjá provides us with specific protocols and permits to conduct our research.

CORTEZ EXPEDITIONS

Cortez Expeditions is the only PADI 5 Star IDC facility in The Sea of Cortez. Lead by award winning filmmaker and photographer Luke Inman and marine biologist Afelandra Gonzalez, Cortez Expeditions provides our program with safety diving rules and protocols. Cortez Expeditions also conducts several of our PADI program extensions. Luke is a PADI Course Director and has been diving and teaching scuba for 20 years.

CABO SHARK DIVE

Cabo Shark Dive is a shark diving tour operator based in Cabo San Lucas. The founder of Cabo Shark Dive is Jacopo Brunetti, Italian marine biologist, PADI scuba instructor, professional underwater photographer, sharks behavioural expert and professional shark dive guide. Cabo Shark Dive provides us with logistic support and expertise in order to survey pelagic shark populations. With this collaboration we aim to create a baseline of pelagic shark populations  as well as generating the basis for a sustainable shark watching industry in the area.
